William Robert Combs

April 9, 1945 — July 11, 2025

Conroe

In Loving Memory of William Robert Combs, known to many as “Robert,” passed away on July 11, 2025, at the age of 80. Affectionately called “Billy Bob” by his mother, “Mountain Mover” on CB radio, and “Old Man” by his grandson Tyler, Robert was a man of many names and even more beloved roles.

Born and raised in East Lansing, Michigan, Robert attended Michigan State University, where he excelled in athletics, earning varsity letters in basketball and track. His tall, lean frame earned him the nickname “Bones,” and his tenacity on and off the court hinted at the remarkable life ahead.

Though accepted to the University of Michigan Law School, Robert followed a different calling—beginning a distinguished 25-year career with IBM as a Project Manager. Known for his leadership on major accounts including Exxon Mobil and American Airlines, Robert’s excellence earned him numerous awards and lasting friendships.

Robert’s magnetic personality made him unforgettable. He had a gift for connection—once you were his friend, you were his friend for life. While living on Bull Run Mountain in Manassas, Virginia, he gave back through volunteer firefighting and local sports leagues. Later, in Gaithersburg, Virginia, he continued serving others by volunteering at food distribution centers in Washington, D.C. and enjoying steak dinners at the Flaming Pit.

Following his retirement from IBM, Robert worked at ComDisco in Chicago before fully retiring to Lake Fork, Texas. There, he cherished peaceful days fishing on the lake and frequenting his favorite local spot, the Minnow Bucket.

In 2012, Robert married the love of his life, Pamela Jean Combs. Their 13 years together were filled with deep joy, laughter, and love until her passing in April 2025.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Gerald and Mary Tischner Combs; his brother, James Christopher Combs; his sister, Jessica Cheryl Combs; and his sister-in-law, Jill Combs. He is survived by his children, Robert Christopher Combs and Carrie Lynn Combs, and grandchildren Tyler, Olivia, and Samuel. He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Tra’ West (Christy) and Dorian Martin (Heath), and their children Caitlyn, Joey, Annebeth, Jory, and Jase.

Robert will be deeply missed, but his memory will be cherished by all who knew him. His family finds comfort in knowing he has been reunited with his beloved Pamela.

A private celebration of life will be held in Conroe, Texas, on Friday, July 18, 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Robert’s generous spirit by finding a great deal at Marshalls or TJ Maxx to donate to charitable organization or by contributing to the National Kidney Foundation or a local Parkinson’s organization.
