Robert Garrett “Gary” Lauhon, age 85, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026, in Magnolia, Texas. Born on December 24, 1940, in Galveston, Texas, Gary lived a life marked by service, curiosity, humor, and deep devotion to the people and animals he loved most. Above all else, he cherished his wife and daughters, who were the center of his world. Throughout his life he was also the devoted master of many deeply loved dogs, who were constant companions and a source of great joy to him.
Gary was born to Esther Eugenia Garrett of Waller, Texas, and William Robert Lauhon of Noblesville, Indiana. He was raised in Alvin, Texas, where he attended Alvin High School and proudly played football (#55) for the Alvin Yellowjackets.
Following high school, Gary honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1959 to 1965, including service in Japan. During his military service he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and earned the M1 Rifle Expert Badge, reflecting both his discipline and dedication.
After completing his military service, Gary pursued higher education. He attended the University of Houston, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education, and later attended the University of Arkansas, where he earned a Master of Science in Industrial Technology. During this time, he also served as an intern at NASA, where he worked on the Project Gemini rocket program.
Gary later held a variety of positions within both government and the oil field industries, including work with the Red River Army Depot, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Vetco Gray, among others.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, and horse racing enthusiast, and he loved traveling in pursuit of these passions. Gary was known for being charming, intelligent, ingenious, funny, and unafraid to be a little goofy. He was kind, friendly, and patient (most of the time) and those who knew him well will remember his wit, his stories, and his unmistakable personality.
Gary is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Lou Lauhon; his daughters Stacy Lauhon George (Chris) of Martinsdale, Texas; Angelea Kelly of Gran Alacant, Spain; and Crystal Lauhon Sasse (Joe) of Floyds Knobs, Indiana. He is also survived by his five grandchildren: Madison Dornak (Jason), Major George, Thatcher Sasse, Archer Sasse, and Trinity Sasse.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Lauhon; his mother, Esther Lauhon; his brother, Jack Jackson; and his brother, William “Billy” Lawhon.
In accordance with Gary’s wishes, no service or funeral will be held. His remains will be cremated and handled privately by the family.
