Koffi Francois Houngbo, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away on January 7, 2026, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 68. Born on December 31, 1957, in Batonou, Republic of Togo, Koffi lived a life dedicated to service, education, and family, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness.
His journey began at the University of Benin, where he earned double degrees in Chemistry/Physics and Geology/Biology. This academic foundation propelled Koffi into an impressive career that included significant roles with United Airlines, Newrest-USA, and Weatherford International. Notably, he served as a Diplomat at the Permanent Mission of Togo to the United Nations in New York, where he distinguished himself through his interactions with notable global leaders, including President Gnassignbe Eyadema of Togo. Many high-ranking officials fondly remembered him and referred to him as Chief Houngbo.
Koffi's personality was characterized by his infectious smile and selfless nature. He opened his heart to everyone around him and made friends wherever he roamed, whether across the globe or just within his community. A dedicated worker, he embraced his responsibilities with fervor, always prioritizing the needs of his family.
In his personal life, Koffi cherished his role as a husband to Veverly Skinner Houngbo, whom he married on August 19, 2000, and as a father to their children: Jacques Houngbo, Bernadette Houngbo, James Powell, Francean Houngbo of Brooklyn, NY, and Khristian Houngbo of Houston, Texas. He instilled in his children the importance of education, often reminding them, "Getting an education is not for me, but for you," a phrase they will carry with them always. Koffi's love for children was evident; he found joy in comforting babies and toddlers, embodying the nurturing spirit that defined him.
Koffi had a unique sense of humor that brought laughter to his family, especially with his lighthearted refusal of hotdogs—a running joke that endeared him to those who knew him. His interests also included travel and cinema, particularly enjoying independent Nollywood movies. He was multilingual, often delighting others by conversing in their native languages, especially those from Africa.
He is survived by his devoted wife Veverly Skinner Houngbo, their children, and his siblings Afanou Kpometo of Kouami in Oumako, Benin, Afanou Kpometo of Kocouvi Firmin in Libreville, Gabon, Houngbo Koffi in Cotonou, Benin, Houngbo Hounsiafa in Cotonou, Benin, and Houngbo Denise Cathe in Cotonou, Benin. Two special cousins who held a dear place in his family's heart are Adokou Noel and Adokou Felix, both residing in Oumako, Benin.
Koffi’s life was a vivid tapestry woven with compassion, dedication, and love. As family and friends gather to remember him, his spirit will undoubtedly shine through the countless memories he created and the lives he touched. His legacy will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know him.
