Ivan James Korenek, age 88, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of May 31, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, and other loved ones.
Ivan was born on November 8, 1937, in Schulenburg, Texas, to Jerome and Sophie Korenek. As a young man, he worked alongside his family on the farm, where he learned the value of hard work and perseverance. After graduating from high school, he proudly served in the United States Army. During his military service, he met Ruby, a young woman from Jasper, Texas. The two married in 1962 and later built a life together in the Houston area.
Ivan and Ruby eventually made their home in Tomball, Texas, where they lived for most of their married life and raised their family. Ivan worked for Overhead Door before continuing his career with Cleco and later Drilco, where he spent many years before retiring. He was known for his strong work ethic and his commitment to providing for his family.
Outside of work, Ivan enjoyed fishing, woodworking, gardening, and hunting with his buddies. He especially loved spending time outdoors with family and friends. Many of his grandchildren will remember the fishing trips they shared with him and the stories and memories made along the way.
In his later years, Ivan became a caregiver to his wife, Ruby. He approached that role with the same dedication and sense of responsibility that guided him throughout his life. His family will remember him as a hardworking man who persevered through life’s challenges and always did what needed to be done.
Ivan was the youngest of nine children and was preceded in death by seven of his brothers and sisters.
Ivan is survived by his wife, Ruby Korenek; his daughter, Debra Kay Doran and her husband, Thomas; his son, Steven James Korenek; his grandchildren, CJ, Brandon, Marcus and his fiancée, Jordan, and Brian; his great-grandchildren, Aster, Haley, and Liam; his sister, Anne Draskovich; many nieces and nephews; extended family members; and friends who will cherish his memory.
In accordance with Ivan’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. The family may gather at a later date to celebrate his life.
