David Nicholas Ryan

David Nicholas Ryan, devoted husband, cherished father and brother, and beloved friend, passed away on August 9, 2026, in Conroe, Texas. Born on January 2, 1953, in Palestine, Texas, David’s life was marked by devotion to family and friends, commitment to community and country, and a joy for life’s simple pleasures.

David grew up in Palestine, where he graduated from Palestine High School in 1971. He went on to study auto mechanics at Henderson County Junior College in Athens, Texas, where he developed interests and skills that shaped his early adulthood.

Soon after his schooling, David answered the call to serve, dedicating six years (1971–1977) to the Texas National Guard. He rose to the rank of Sergeant E5, serving honorably as a Tank Driver M60A1 and as a Senior Recovery Vehicle Operator M88. His years in the National Guard reflected his sense of duty, discipline, and pride in serving his state and nation.

David began a distinguished career as a train dispatcher for the Missouri Pacific/Union Pacific Rail Road. Over the years, his commitment and work ethic took him to various locations, including Valley Junction, Palestine, Spring, and Omaha, Nebraska. Through dedication and diligence, he became a respected colleague and an integral part of the railroad community.

A love of the outdoors and keen attention to his surroundings characterized David’s daily life. He was happiest keeping his yard looking perfect, riding his Harley Davidson along wide stretches of road, and grilling meals for those he cherished. His interests were a constant thread in his days, whether he was traveling to National Parks, working in the yard together with his loved ones, “piddling” in the garage during chilly weather, or starting mornings with coffee and wildlife-watching on the patio. Evenings often found him gathering with family and friends for shared meals, recounting stories, and enjoying laughter and warmth.

David’s commitment extended beyond his home, as he was a Life Member and 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Anthony of The Woodlands Council 12327. He was also a Life Member of The Big Horn Society and of Ducks Unlimited, finding camaraderie and purpose among these communities.

Those who knew David remember him as an outstanding human being—funny, compassionate, and always ready with a joke. He was a true gentleman, a devoted brother and friend, and an extraordinary husband and father. He loved country and western music and dancing, and most of all, he delighted in caring for his home and family. His presence brought comfort, happiness, and a sense of belonging to those around him.

David’s memory will be forever cherished by those who survive him: his spouse, Cheryl D. Ryan; his daughter, Kelly D. Garrett; his twin brother, Mark S. Ryan and wife, Regina (Jeanie) Ryan; and his nephews, John D. Ryan and Joshua S. Ryan. He is preceded in death by his loving mother, Sybil E. Shoemaker, and his father, Paul E. Ryan.

David Nicholas Ryan’s legacy persists in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him and in the moments and memories he created with family and friends.
